When you’re selling on Etsy, as with any business, you want to sell items that are in demand. After all, you’re more likely to make a sale if there are a lot of people looking for your product. But trends change, and on Etsy especially, you need to keep up with the trends. So, where can you go to find trending Etsy searches?

Some categories of items sell well on Etsy no matter what time of year it is or even what year it is. They sold well in 2021. They sold well in 2022. They’re selling well in 2023.

While the inventory in these categories may change from year to year, the categories themselves stay the same.

So, what’s popular on Etsy?

Art and Collectibles

Art pieces speak to people in different ways. People are constantly scouring Etsy for works of art that speak to them personally.

Whether the art is a print of an old classic or a new work of art, there’s something out there for everyone.

Etsy is known as a home for the handmade, and art is no exception.

Meanwhile, many collectibles are original works of art in their own right, which is why shoppers visit Etsy to try and find the piece of original artwork they’re looking for.

Crafting Supplies

Since Etsy is known as a home for artists and handmade goods, many people have centered their shops around catering to those creators.

Crafting supplies and tools sell well on Etsy, especially the items connected to jewelry, sewing, and knitting, or crochet, especially patterns.

Items in the Printables category also sell well on Etsy year over year.

From a buyer’s standpoint, there are two key benefits to printables. One, the price point is correct. Usually, printables can cost as little as a dollar. Two, there’s no shipping cost. Most printable products are instant downloads, meaning the buyer receives a link to the item the moment it’s purchased.

These two key factors make printables ideal for the Etsy shopper looking for a bargain.

From the seller side, it’s super passive once you get started making and selling printables compared to handmade products. We have had students here at Gold City Ventures who have made thousands selling printables.

This is our favorite category of products on Etsy.

While popular categories tend to stay the same, the items within those categories are constantly changing. You need to keep up with the changes. You need to know what’s trending.

To ensure you know what’s trending on Etsy, there are a few simple things you can track.

Your first option is to scroll through the items in “Trending Now.” Etsy has an entire page dedicated to what’s trending on the site at the moment. You can find it here.

Etsy breaks up the section into many different categories, including “Top Rated,” “Bestseller,” and “$25 to $100.”

Using the “Trending Now” page on Etsy is one of the easiest ways to determine what people are searching for at the moment.

Editor’s Picks

You can also search through the “Editor’s Picks” to find out what’s trending on Etsy.

In the “Editor’s Picks,” Etsy editors curate some of the top items in specific categories. For example, in October, the editors have created a Halloween shop to showcase some of the best costumes and decorations for the holiday.

Other “Editor’s Picks” lists include “Gifts for Him,” “Gifts for Her,” “The Wedding Shop,” and “Gifts Under $30.”

Remember, Etsy editors are expected to keep up with the latest trends on the site, so looking at what they’re recommending is a great way to see what’s trending on Etsy at any given moment.

Most Searched for Things on Etsy

Those are the easy ways to find out what’s trending on Etsy, but how else can you find the most searched for things on Etsy?

There are sites and apps dedicated to helping Etsy sellers improve their stores and their product offerings. These tools monitor what people search for on Etsy, Google, and other sites and then report back to their customers.

Please note: Etsy does not release search volume to third parties but these tools have other ways of estimating search volume on Etsy.

One of the most popular apps available to Etsy sellers is eRank. eRank is a tool you can use to find the keywords “real buyers” use, tell you what’s trending and popular on Etsy, and help you increase the visibility of your current listings so that they will be more likely to appear in search results.

It is one of the top recommended apps by Etsy sellers.

In terms of cost, eRank has a free plan for sellers who don’t post many products but still need the tools. There are also affordable premium plans under $10 per month.

We reviewed how to use eRank and the plan offerings. It’s a great first step for sellers looking to improve their SEO and find trending products.

Like eRank, Marmalead also comes highly recommended by Etsy sellers. Like eRank, Marmalead will help you identify keywords that shoppers use to search Etsy.

In terms of pricing, the site runs differently than eRank. While eRank has tiers for shoppers, Marmalead has one plan for everyone. It currently costs $19/month, though users that pay the annual fee get a discount.

This tool is a Chrome Extension that you can use when you are browsing Etsy to perform deep dive on bestselling products in real time.

Recently Everbee released a new feature where you can see search volume for Etsy tags attached to a listing.

This tool is another dashboard that has great filtering by digital products if you sell them.

You can use the database of products to find in-demand trending products that seem to be working well for other sellers.

Sales Samurai

This tool is a Chrome extension that works when you type things in to the Etsy search bar.

It populates a search volume next to each auto-populated term.

Sales Samurai has other features that we cover here in this Sales Samurai review but that is the top one.

We just discovered this tool which has categories of trending products already organized for you. For example, you can dive into wedding, wall art, or other categories. You can even filter by digital products which is big for us here at Gold City Ventures.

This last tool is good for figuring out estimated revenue of products.

That can be really helpful if you want to dig deeper into a trending product that you find on Etsy that is popular. Check out Alura here.

So, what’s trending right now on Etsy?

According to the Etsy editors, pink and all of its iterations is hot right now. Whether it’s the mauve velvet socks featured by TatianasThreads, or the BabaMoon’s pink pom pom hat, pink is the color you want to highlight.

In terms of items, it’s very seasonal. For example, back-to-school is a big seller in August, including personalized gifts for teacher, creative and unique back-to-school supplies, or even cute kits to help kids keep up with their schoolwork.

For the holidays, teacher appreciation gifts and digital planners as we move into the New Year tend to be big. We love to cover top Etsy trends on our Instagram and pull trends from the top tools regularly to share with our followers @goldcityventures.

Top Searches Etsy

When it comes to the top searches on Etsy, eRank is usually pretty good about putting out lists, though they may be a month or so behind. We love their Trend Buzz feature which can tell you all of the data from last year that was trending for your current month.

For example, eRank’s list for July 2022 is interesting. July is a transition month between summer and fall, so seasonal items for both are popular. eRank reports that back to school is a hot topic, and it’s never too soon to get ready for Halloween.

Search terms that topped eRank’s lists in July 2022 included terms like “summer jewelry,” “minimalist,” “personalized gifts,” and “wedding.”

In terms of themes, eRank reports that editors at Etsy aren’t wrong. Pink is the hot color search term. When it comes to fashion, “Boho,” “Mid Century Modern,” and “Cottage Core” are all trending topics.

Most Searched for on Etsy

Meanwhile, Marmalead breaks down the keywords a little differently. For example, it tracks the most popular keywords for 2022 and adds to the list as needed. Those are grouped into categories such as “most popular keywords on Etsy in 2022 for weddings and celebrations” and “most popular keywords on Etsy in 2022 for that special someone.”

On the one hand, this will help you find the keywords in the categories you sell in the most. However, it may not be the most ideal since it will not tell you the words that are trending on Etsy overall, simply the words that are trending in specific categories at this time.

How to Trend on Etsy

Knowing what the top keywords on Etsy are at any given time is just one of the battles. It will help you determine what stock you need in your shop.

However, having that stock will only get you so far. You will also need to list your inventory accurately. You need to become a part of the Etsy trend.

The best way to do that is to understand how Etsy searches work and manipulate your listings so that they are the most likely to appear in as many Etsy searches as possible.

How Do Etsy Search Results Work?

So, how do Etsy search results work?

Like most companies, Etsy keeps the exact details of its search algorithm secret. However, it does divulge how the search algorithm works in general terms.

The search algorithm helps Etsy determine which items appear in search results and in which order those items appear.

Etsy always wants to give searchers the best results possible. Quality search results are what help make the site popular. So, the closer your item gets to the buyer’s search word or phrase, the more likely your item will appear at the top of search results.

Recently Etsy published the beginners guide to SEO on Google and that was very helpful for sellers to understand how to prep their listings to be found in Google search too.

In general terms though, Etsy recommends the following:

Tags and Title

One of the first things Etsy scans are the tags and title of your listing. Your item is more likely to appear at the top of a search page if the title or tags include all of the words in a buyer’s search.

For example, if a buyer is looking for a “pink poodle skirt,” then a listing with all three words, “pink,” “poodle,” and “skirt” will appear at the top of the search results. If you are missing one of these words, Etsy will drop your listing further down the search results or omit the listing altogether.

According to Etsy, once matches are found, they will be ranked by keywords to determine which result pops up at the top of a page.

Exact phrases get a higher ranking, so listings that include “pink poodle skirt” all in one phrase will pop up before listings that include some but not all of the words.

Etsy says if the word or phrase is in both the title and the tags, that also boosts the rank compared to if the word or phrase appears in only the title or tags alone.

Finally, words at the beginning of titles are considered more important than ones at the end.

Item Attributes

In the interest of expediency, it may be tempting to skip over the item attributes section or do the bare minimum. After all, those sections can be tedious to fill out.

However, you would be doing yourself a disservice.

Etsy weighs the details in the item attributes almost as heavily as it weights the keywords that it finds in titles and tags.

Be accurate and thorough when filling out the item attributes section. It will help.

Listing Quality

Etsy calls it listing quality, but you could also call it a performance measurement. All listings start with a neutral score.

However, the more often a buyer clicks on your listing, adds it to their favorites, or, better yet, makes a purchase, the higher your listing’s quality score will be.

Items with a higher quality score rank higher in the search results.

Your Etsy shop conversion rate can also attribute to the listing quality. For details on how you can measure your shop’s conversion rate and how that conversion rate impacts your listings, check out this previous post here.

Other Keys to Etsy Search Rankings

Other things that Etsy looks at when it’s ranking search results include the shop’s standing, including customer reviews and adherence to Etsy policies, how recently an item was added to Etsy or relisted on Etsy, the location of the shop and the buyer, the language used in the listing and more.

Ultimately, knowing what searches are trending on Etsy doesn’t just help you stock your shop. It also helps you better list the items you are selling. Sometimes, you don’t need to revise your shop’s stock; you just need to adjust your listings so that they better cater to current Etsy trends.

When you understand how Etsy search results work, you can better pinpoint whether your shop’s stock is the issue or the listing itself. If it’s the listing, you can use what’s trending to help improve your listing’s search rankings. That can be invaluable in improving your shop’s overall sales and ranking on Etsy.

Checking out your shops conversion rate can also be really helpful to determine if you are utilizing search information correct end to end.

Knowing what’s trending on Etsy is essential whether you’re launching your Etsy shop or trying to improve a shop you already have.

When you know what’s trending on the site, you can adjust your inventory to work with the site’s trends, but even more, you can change your listings so that the tags and titles match current trends.

If you’re a beginner, make use of Etsy’s know-how. They’re professionals, so they make a point of tracking the newest trends and searches. Lists like “Trending Now” and “Editor’s Picks” are free tools at your disposal, and you would be remiss not to take advantage of them.

If you’re a more seasoned Etsy shop owner, then a site like eRank or Marmalead will help you take your shop to the next level. These sites track trends just as closely as the Etsy professionals do, so adjusting your keywords, tags and titles as the markets change will help your listings stay fresh and at the top of search results.
